CLASSIFIED STAFF MEETING
OCTOBER 6, 2004
10 AM, BOARD ROOM, JLSC
Attendance: Jolene McKinnon, Lanny Richards, Lana Keller, Edee McKinney, Mary Kava, Pat Robertson, Verna Lauritsen, Kelli Curtis, Susan Leonard, Geniva Brooks
Geniva Brooks, President, called the meeting to order and asked if there was any changes to the minutes of our last meeting. Mary Kava said that the statement she made concerning fair labor laws should read “may not follow fair labor laws”. After the change was made Mary Kava motioned for the minutes to be accepted and Kelli Curtis second the motion.
Geniva said that we need more crafters to participate in our craft fair. If we have 25 crafters we will make $1250.00. We only have one application so far. Mary suggested doing a news letter which would detail what we are trying to do as an association. Geniva said she will be advertising through KOAL with Keith Mason. She is planning on going up north and stopping at several businesses and personally asking them to enter our craft fair.
We discussed how to distribute the scholarship money we will collect from the fair. Geniva suggested giving one to a non-traditional student. Pat Robertson said that most of the non-traditional students receive a lot of financial aid. Mary Kava agreed stating that the nursing students (many of whom are non-traditional) do get their expenses paid through different agencies. Susan Leonard suggested giving the sum to the scholarship fund and letting Todd Olsen determine who the recipient will be.
HALLOWEEN
Our Halloween Party will be held Tuesday, October 26th at 6 to 8 pm in the Multi-Purpose room of the JLSC.. It will be a costume party. The reason we chose Tuesday is because UEA is on Thursday and Friday of that week and many of our employees will be affected by the event. Sloppy Joes will be served and Brad King will pay for the mix. We will also do pot luck. Geniva asked for volunteers to decorate for the party. They had 100 people attend last year’s party.
The entertainment will be Nine-Mile Players.
Ernestine Gilson’s knee surgery went well and she was just about ready to come back to work when she had to have gall bladder surgery. Geniva asked Lana Keller if she would be willing to take over the secretarial duties until Ernestine came back. Lana agreed and Mary Kava made a motion to accept Lana as the new temporary secretary and Kelli Curtis second the motion.
Geniva suggested we started to think about what we would do for Thanksgiving. She suggested that we set our goal at trying to feed 15 families since we fed three families last year with our donations. We work with United Way and they suggest families to us. It was suggested that we put an email on the sideline and let everyone on campus contribute with us spear heading the operation. Edee McKinney suggested that our drop off point could be Rosemary since she did such a good job last year and she has use of the refrigerators. Geniva said she would ask her if she would be willing to do it.
Geniva suggested we read over our insurance policies so we are familiar with what is covered and services that are not. A few employees were surprised when they went to use their benefits.
Pat Robertson won the drawing at the end of our meeting. It was a $5 Certificate to the CEU Bookstore.
Brad King never showed up to give his presentation on what goes on at Capitol Hill so the meeting was adjourned at 11 a.m.
